"Green" Stormwater Solutions
With the construction and development of our cities came “stormwater” – the rain that runs off homes, roads and parking lots. More often than not, this abundance of water was considered a pollutant and carried away as quick as possible through drains, ditches and concrete flumes. After the rain has been collected, conveyed and funneled through these systems, it is dumped into nearby creeks, streams, rivers and ponds. Unfortunately, this increased volume of water is much more than our waterways can handle, resulting in flooding, erosion, sedimentation and loss of aquatic habitat. Because the landscape of our watersheds has been altered by urbanization and development, we have begun to exceed the capacity for a stable, healthy environment.
As a result, there have been many new ideas and innovations that are changing the way stormwater is managed. The most effective way to handle stormwater is to first reduce its volume. By finding new ways to slow, store or use rain before it becomes stormwater runoff, municipalities and developers can prevent overloading existing stormwater systems and avoid fines, fees or penalties. Rebuilding a stormwater system to accept a larger volume of water is much more expensive than taking the small steps to reduce runoff. "Green" stormwater quality sytems incorporat natural processes to recharge groundwater and filter out pollutants. By incorporating decorative Kentucky native plants into low-maintenance, landscaped basins, these systems also provide aesthetic value and wildlife habitat. Realizing rainwater as a valuable asset (especially when drinking water is in short supply) has literally given an upstream approach to stormwater management.
EcoGro reflects this new concept of "Green" solutions. It is apparent that nature does have a place in our communities and supports a higher quality of living. By reconstructing the natural processes that moderate and filter stormwater runoff, we can reduce the degredation of our local waterways. Our services include:
