EcoGro was contracted by the Woodfield Homeowners Association to provide an attractive solution to address
an eroding pond edge. The pond, which sits at the main entrance to the community, is a focal point of the landscape. A large volume
of water running off the main roads was washing sediment and pollutants into the pond, degrading both the bank stability and water
quality. After killing off the existing weeds and turf, we blew in a ½” compost blanket to protect the soil erosion and increase seed
germination. Permeable rock weirs were also constructed to catch sediment and reduce runoff velocities before it reached the
pond. Wood chips were blown in place to create a new trail through the wildflower planting. Native grasses and wildflower seed were
then sown in mass bed areas to provide a landscape aesthetic. Annual grasses were also used to provide a quick vegetative cover as
the natives establish. Aquatic plant plugs and live stakes were installed below the water line to provide additional visual interest,
sediment traps and nutrient uptake. Lastly, decorative trees and shrubs were planted to enhance visual interest. We have established
an ongoing stewardship program with the homeowners association to ensure the long-term success of this low-maintenance project.
