We were contacted in the beginning of October 2004 by a local landscape contractor to seed the lawn of a horse farm. They had created a detention pond and re-graded an area to accommodate turf grass. Because of the late seeding time, they needed something to germinate fast, as well as hold up to the unpredictable nature of the weather in the fall. We recommended terraseeding (applying a seeded compost blanket) for the 70,000 sq ft site to provide immediate erosion protection as well as an excellent seed germination media. A blend of turf type fescue and perennial rye was selected due to the time requirements for germination and the transition of the area from sun to shade.
Even though October is historically the driest month, we received an unusual rain event of 5.5” of rain in a 4-hour period at the site. Due to its location between a large parking lot producing significant volumes of runoff and a receiving pond, much of the site was under 1’ of water for a short period of time. Even still, the seed germinated beautifully; with only about 5% of the area (which received the heaviest concentration of flows) had to be touched up.
