First Alliance Church was having difficulty maintaining a steep section of turf next to a newly constructed stormwater detention pond. The exposed soil was eroding and forming rills. Not only was the soil too poor to support a healthy stand of turf-type fescue, it was a serious safety hazard and liability to mow. The area was visible from a major road as well as a new subdivision and was not visually appealing.
EcoGro was consulted and recommended the area be seeded with native flowers and grasses to control the erosion, minimize the maintenance, make it more attractive, and provide a habitat for wildlife. We first blew a compost erosion control blanket onto a Filtrexx lockdown netting to bind the compost to the slope. We then applied the native seed mixture and installed a rolled blanket. Filtrexx Filtersoxx were used as slope interruption devices to control concentrated flows from the parking lot. We have continued to service the site as part of our restoration stewardship program. Through selective weed control, we have ensured the native grasses and wildflowers are not suppressed by aggressive weeds. Not only does this keep the site looking tidy, but allows for a more prominent display of the wildflowers.
